George Baker 8 Aralık 1944 'de Hollandanın Hoorn şehrinde doğdu. Asıl ismi Johannes Bouwens'dir. (Malum olunacağı gibi bu isim şarkıcı olacak birinin ünlü olması ve hayranları tarafından telaffuzu epey zor.) 1967 yılında Bouwens Soul Invention grubu ile birleşti; topluluğun yeni adını George Baker Selection koydular. İlk albümleri Little Green Bag (1970), bu albümle onlar ilk büyük hitlerini elde etti. Bu ilk 45'likleri Amerika'da Billboard Top 100 listelerinde 21. sıraya; Cash Box Magazine listelerinde 16. sıraya kadar ulaştı. Bu plak dünya çapında bir milyon kopya sattı ve gruba altın plak ödülünü getirdi. 1972 yılında bu kayıt 5 milyonun üzerinde bir şatış rakamına ulaştı.
Grup 5. albümleri olan Paloma Blanca 1975 'te yayımladılar. bu albüm bir çok ülkede liste başı oldu.
Ve nihayet her grubun başına gelen oldu. Ve 1978 yılında ayrılma kararı aldılar.Gerekçe olarak da "Üzerimizde çok baskı var." dediler. Plakları dünya çapında 20 milyon sattı. George Baker 1985 yılına kadar solo albümlerle müzik yaşamını sürdürdü. 1985 yılında grubu yeni üyelerle tekrar kurdu. Yeni "George Baker Selection" ancak 1989 'a kadar varlığı sürdürebildi. Bu yıldan sonra müzik kariyerine yine yanlız devam eden George Baker solo kariyeri boyunca 9 albüm yaptı.
George Baker Selection olarak grup 12 albüm ve birkaç tane de derleme albüm yayınladı.
1992 yılında Reservoir Dogs da kullanılan "Little Green Bag" ile grup uluslararası müzik listelerine kısa bir dönüş yaptı. "Little Green Bag" Şili de bir TV dizi filminde kullanıldı.
